Rankings are Back!

For those of you with good memories, you might remember we used to have a rankings area of the site.

Well, today we brought back some of these rankings, along with a whole lot more, in a new warm-and-fuzzy Community section. Ever wanted to know who’s the baddest user at Smart.fm? Now you can find out.

Here you’ll see rankings across a number of areas, from top learners to top creators, and a whole bunch in between, including streams of recent activity across the site:

A glance at the current leaderboard and at yesterday’s achievements shows just how serious you all are about learning. Think about that — yesterday alone the Smart.fm community devoured over half a million items. That’s some serious item tonnage.

In this new Community section, you’ll also find an overview of journal activity and an advanced user search area for finding friends, mentors, students, and just about anyone else around the site.

One thing we really want to highlight this year is the Smart.fm community itself, and everything you all are doing. So in addition to improving the learning and content creation tools, we’re going to explore new ways for everyone to interact with each other — on the road towards building a healthy learning community.

    Looks nice happy

How often are the rankings it updated?

    I like it!

The figures on the creation-rankings page aren’t accurate though. Obviously way lower than the actual. Nice start nonetheless.

  3. It will take a little while for all the data to properly generate, so you should see those numbers go up…

What’s going on? Suddenly, iknow no longer says you have 30 items to study today instead it says you have X items to review and X to study… is this goal mode??? I have always studied in long-term mode, plus all the other lists I am following say I am done and have nothing to review, that never happened before… what’s with this sudden change??? I would like to review my goals please…

No more suggested day to come back and review??? I gotta check every goal every day, one at a time???

Is this another “improvement”? It definitely feels like a step backwards and I don’t see the logic of it if I am in long-term study mode… looks like a bug sticking me in Goal-completion mode or something…

  5. @Flinxpip,

We fixed some bugs yesterday, so now you can continue to study just like before. The behavior of the application is exactly the same–the only thing that has changed is the messaging, which is now along the same lines as the beta app messaging.

Regarding the suggested review date, we are about to make some changes to the Home page that will help you out here. More on that coming soon…

I study in long term as well.
You removed recommended study date and now all my studies collapsed.
I had to suspend all my scheduled studies just because of this problem.
Also what does finishing a goal mean? If a goal is finished I wouldn’t come back to review it.
Please please fix this problem asap.
    Regards

It is good to see “goal mode” back functioning in the flash app. There is still a bug present that prevents you from setting a target date, but at least it is letting you continue once again. I usually use “long-term mode” for most things, but goal mode is sometimes preferred for certain lists that I’d rather skip the basic items and not be redundantly drilled with them. For example, song lyric lists.

Sorry about the anonymous post earlier. Was using Safari at the time and forget it doesn’t post the user name automatically on my machine.

I’m glad the rankings are back. It is always interesting to see who is creating the most content.

If your rolling with the community theme now, does that mean we will be seeing a return of the user forums any time soon?

Thanks for the reply Russell, just one thing don’t you find “You’ve 2 items…” a bit casual? I can see my buddy saying something like “you’ve got 2 more items to study” but a teacher would most likely say “You have 2 more items to study” no biggy just seems like slightly odd phrasing to me.

  11. Hi Flinxpip, actually that was unintentional. That odd phrase is being fixed with the next update. We meant to change “You have studied” to “You’ve studied”, as it sounds more friendly, but in the process “You have x items” mistakenly got changed to “You’ve x items”, which certainly sounds strange.

For the last week iKnow told me I had no items to study for all my lists, since they are at 99 or 100% I assumed nothing was vital. Now today it says I have 60-225 items to study on some of my lists. The beta app (as usual) says I have nothing to study.
It has been difficult since the site update for users with multiple completed lists, I have to log into iKnow for 9 lists everyday to find out what I have to study (since the beta app always says to study another goal). When it glitches and I have a backlog like this it is very disheartening.

Is it possible that with your latest “improvements” you removed the AJAX based learning tool? I could understand it, because many of yours wanted to keep iKnow, but I cannot really learn with iKnow, it makes the study process awful (cannot open tabs while focused on flash, flash itself sucks, it is not really convenient but more like forcing yourself to learn).

Never mind, I’ll find something different and will maybe try the desktop application of which I have forgotten the name once more with smartfm data.

ah I’m sorry, I saw that Drill Beta is the new AJAX app. Hope that it will be “Drill stable” soon happy (I removed the visibility: hidden; once and it did not work yet).
